American Presidents and their Pets

After almost 232 years after electing America's first president, the various presidents have brought their own animals and pets into the White House as companions. In today's post, we are going to be highlighting a few specific presidents and their pets.


 

Bill Clinton


During Clinton's administration, he had a black-and-white cat named Socks and later got a chocolate Labrador Retriever, Buddy.


 














 

John F. Kennedy


The Kennedy family a multitude of different animals at the White House including birds, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and many dogs. In the image below, their pony Macaroni is shown.



 

Calvin Coolidge


Calvin Coolidge was an animal lover and had dogs, birds, cats, raccoons, a hippo, a bear, and lion cubs. The First Lady Grace Coolidge was known for owning a raccoon named Rebecca. The Coolidge Family received Rebecca as a gift from a supporter who intended for the animal to be eaten for Thanksgiving dinner, but the First Lady kept her as a pet instead.



 

Theodore Roosevelt


Roosevelt brought a small bear, a pig, a barn owl, a rooster and hen, a hyena, a lizard, snakes, guinea pigs, a pony, multiple dogs, and horses to the White House during his stay.



 

George Washington


With America's first president, he had pets as well even though he did not live in the White House, including a dozen dogs, a parrot, and several horses. Some of his stallions were named Samson, Steady, Leonidas, Traveller, Magnolia.
