In our first rendition exploring how animals impact humans in everyday life, we are spotlighting Banbury Cross Therapeutic Equestrian Center, located in Oxford, Michigan. This organization provides therapeutic horseback riding to individuals with cognitive, behavioral, or emotional disabilities.
Their website describes the approach they take to helping these individuals: "Forms of therapeutic riding has a history of success that extends back to the 1940's in Europe, when a few therapists began to use the gentle motion and rhythmic movement of the horse to stimulate the muscles used in the typical human walk, unable to be replicated in any other therapy."
Founded in 1991 by Ralph and Carol Curtis, the program explains that, "the attraction of the horse and the opportunity to bond with this gentle giant also provides encouragement to riders with emotional or psychological challenges."
