Modern Monday #13: Pets on Wheels

Pets on Wheels is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides therapy animals to facilities across Maryland for friendly visits. More than 175,000 people enjoy their volunteer teams’ visits at nearly 400 special events each year.

Their teams visit free of charge, and the pets offer support, cheer, and love to the people they see. Older residents are reminded of their beloved pets who have passed and children increase their literacy skills as they read stories to the animals. Most visits are made to nursing homes, assisted living communities, hospitals, and facilities for the physically and mentally challenged. Veterans’ hospitals, homeless and domestic violence shelters, teen diversion programs, substance abuse facilities, incarcerational settings, programs for the homeless and children at risk of home outplacement, stress free zones at local colleges during exam time, and library programs have recently become a part of the locations visited for Pets on Wheels.

"Our therapy pets come in all sizes, breeds and species. Any animal that passes the temperament screening may qualify – we do not limit our therapy teams to dogs or cats."

"Yesterday we had the privilege of meeting a woman with disabilities. She said the pups made her problems disappear even if for a brief moment, and that we would be what she remembered from the day." - Erin S., volunteer
