Modern Monday #21: Share-A-Pet

Share-A-Pet is a national Pet Therapy organization that provides pet-assisted therapy in hospitals, nursing homes, children’s centers, and schools. Family spirit and team commitment are incredibly advertised with their practice, making sure that they create a welcoming community. They recruit, train, and register Pet-Assisted Therapy teams worldwide to ensure that the best therapy is provided.

Share-A-Pet was created back in December of 2003 by Sachin Mayi and his yellow lab named Tenzin. Mayi began this journey at the Broward Children’s Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he brought his dog to children who were not responding to other therapies. Sachin and Tenzin began regularly visiting several care facilities and dedicated their lives to serving those in need. Share-A-Pet has since registered almost 1,000 highly qualified volunteers, pet assisted therapy teams, and leaders across the nation. Their program has expanded to include children’s centers, nursing homes, hospitals, cancer centers, and schools with a “Pawsitive Reading” Program.

"It is our goal to be one of the nation’s leading volunteer organizations inspiring volunteerism in every community. Share-A-Pet was created for the purpose of filling a void in the lives of the elderly and otherwise restricted but it has become much more." -- Share-A-Pet Inc.

Their mission statement is "To bring happiness and improve the lives of individuals confined to hospitals, nursing homes and children’s centers and to improve the reading skills of struggling students by providing certified and insured pet-assisted therapy." They are committed to spending the necessary hours with patients to help as best as they can. Share-A-Pet really is an amazing practice and strives to help nearby communities as much as they can.
