My Take: Children and Horses

I have decided to take the idea of my last post and turn it into a series. Called "My Take," I will discuss my anthropological opinions sporadically and share some personal experiences I have encountered.

Today I wanted to talk more about my summer job at the horse camp. I will not be disclosing the name of the ranch for privacy reasons, but for context, know that it is a ranch with around 80 horses where girls from ages 6 to 15 attend sleepaway camp.

I attended the camp for 8 years before becoming of age to be a staff member, and I learned a lot over the course of the last three months.

I am someone who is more introverted. I enjoy a social scene, but get tired easily and value my time alone a lot. Counselors are pretty much forced into constantly being surrounded by kids because our job is to supervise them.

From my own personality, I like observing others and their behavior (hence why anthropology is a fascination of mine). A lot of the young girls have extremely big personalities, but others are quiet and reserved. While they differ in a lot of core traits, they are brought together by their love of animals, in particular horses. Two girls may seem to have nothing in common, but the camp brings all of them together. The bond between man and animal seems to overturn the bond between man and man (or rather girl and girl). This notion creates an interesting question of "why is this true?" Why is man not similar enough in its own species that it must rely on other species to find similarity?

Forever asking,

- E
